Ambition can help us use our gifts well, yet it can also make achievement feel like the measure of our worth. Before the next goal takes over your attention, Proverbs offers a quieter question: who has been entrusted with your work?
Proverbs 16:3 brings the focus back to the LORD. The verse does not condemn planning or meaningful effort. It calls us to place the work itself, including its purpose and outcome, before God.
In Proverbs, wise living includes taking responsibility while recognizing God’s authority. The original audience would have understood work as part of ordinary faithfulness, not merely a path to status. The verse does not promise that every plan will be completed exactly as imagined. A Prayer for Success and Godly Ambition
LORD, You are wise, sovereign, and worthy of trust. You see the purpose behind my work more clearly than I do, and Your wisdom is steadier than my plans.
Forgive me for treating achievement as proof of my worth or trying to control every outcome. Expose pride in my ambition, and teach me to pursue good work without making success my master.
Thank You for giving me opportunities, abilities, and responsibilities to use faithfully. Thank You that I can bring my plans to You instead of carrying them as though everything depends on me.
Guide my motives, decisions, and daily work. Help me plan carefully, act honestly, receive correction, and remain faithful when results differ from what I hoped. Shape my ambitions according to Your wisdom, and give me humility to trust Your direction. Amen.
